Review of Wild Strawberries (2012) by Blackity B — 24 Sep 2008
At first I put of watching this movie as some reviews made it sound like a strongly athiestic piece, but now that I saw it I can not believe anyone could arrive at such conclusion. If anything the movie is a confirmation of Bergman's athiestic status - he knows the question of God is insolvable (established in the Seventh Seal), and here he says that the ony way to find peace is to stop debating it. Just drop it, and live life. Whatever else happens, happens.
The movie itself is beautiful and sad at the same time. We feel for the old man's guilt and loneliness, and are pulled into his dreams, past recolections, and inner change. The cinematography is beautiful, and the actors are very strong. His daughter-in-law especially provides some of the best character interaction in the movie.
A piece of art, if there ever was one.
