Review of W.E. (2011) by Jackeline A — 06 Jul 2012
It is a movie with great potential but I think Madonna is trying to do something really difficult: share English history that is rarely told (so many Americans do not know the story) and tell a good contemporary story all at the same time.
At first I was not drawn in at all and it was hard to follow. I paused the film and did some research on Wallis Simpson and King Edward; afterwards I started to watch it again. It made a lot more sense after that and the movie got more and more engaging as it went on.
The story is extremely interesting and makes me want to learn more about the couple; I feel like I could relate to Wallis. She was in a romance that was both famous and infamous due to it being so high profile, yet it had its downfalls like most do.
Incredible Romance with Instability vs. No Romance with Stability (not to be mistaken for the absence of love)... I think this is something a lot of couples can relate to. It is an extremely complex film that I really enjoyed.
Unfortunately complex doesn't always win over big crowds; such a shame.
