Review of W.E. (2011) by Fernando H — 29 Jun 2013
Beautifully costumed and photographed, W.E. is pure anti-romance. And I mean that in a good way. W.E. clearly depicts the price one can pay for following your heart. As a director, Madonna perfectly captures the period section of her film but the modern episodes seem to be taking place in some New York City that does not and has not ever existed.
There's so much good in this film, especially the performance of Andrea Riseborough, that I wish Madonna had not become obsessed with the wealth and glamour on display. All too often the film looks like a very expensive perfume ad.
Stripped down a bit W.E. would truly register as the heartfelt film it wants to be and could have been.
