Review of W.E. (2011) by Simon D — 14 Mar 2016
I'm a huge Madonna fan, but even I will admit that some of her films are stinkers. W.E., however, is not one of them. It was clearly a labour of love and in a way, more satisfying than her last two albums.
Critics have rightly praised Andrea Riseborough's uncanny impersonation of Wallis Simpson, but for me it was Abbie Cornish as the vulnerable Wally who stole the show. It's visually and sonically gorgeous, a searing examination of fame and womanhood from Madonna, who knows of which she speaks.
