If we want to get all auteurist, you could claim that Cimino's identifying with the young upstart (Jeff Bridges) who has the gall and chutzpah to keep up with Eastwood (it was Cimino's first directorial job, and he pleaded with Eastwood to give him his shot).
Or, perhaps the friendship as depicted could just be thickly laquered homoeroticism.
