Review of The Cider House Rules (1999) by Walker — 20 Oct 2008
CONSENSUS: A fundamental coming-of-age story blended with the moral complexity of abortion; well-acted with a solid lead in Maguire and Oscar winning performance by Caine. The issues of choice and consequence unfortunately do not deepen the film's expression, but simply make a disarray of it.
Theron's character also adds to the mess despite the good performance. The audience in the end becomes just as confused as the protaganist, but in the sense of seeking the point rather than truth.
A cynical picture that lacks true bite that ends up being another fair film spotted with potential, but not truly worthy of its fine actors. MY GRADE: B-.
