If you've seen my ratings for 2001 and Full Metal Jacket, then you've probably guessed that I'm really not a Stanley Kubrick fan. I know that any mild criticism of Kubrick's work will earn me abuse, so I might as well come out all the way and say that I didn't like this one much either.

The only Kubrick film that I have seen so far that I can actually say that I loved was Dr. Strangelove. I really was hoping that I would love this movie and that it would enable me to love Kubrick, but it maintains the same cold-heartedness that I've come to expect from his work and thus leaves me feeling so emotionally empty and vacant that I might as well feel miserable after viewing it.

I'm actually really surprised that so many people champion this film's ending as being incredibly moving, because I found it to be uncomfortable and inconclusive. Somehow I couldn't believe that every single damn French soldier would be moved to tears by a German woman that they were just taunting a second ago.
