Review of On the Waterfront (1954) by Michael T — 08 Mar 2009
Kazan was trying to justify his "naming names" before HUAC which is why he directed this film about a man who ultimately testifies against the machinations of a thoroughly corrupt union boss who is in bed with the mob.
One cannot watch this film without thinking about what Kazan did and how he tries to justify his actions. What he did was unforgivable, but the man was a great director. The scene between Marlon Brando and Rod Steiger in the back of that taxi cab is worth the price of admission.
