Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Garrett C — 11 Jul 2016

I know I lose all film snob credibility whenever I admit to not liking classic works by foreign mega-directors like Fellini or Antonioni, but whatever. I really disliked this film. It's obscenely dull, unbearably pretentious, slimy cold, and deeply nihilistic.

The only redeeming quality of the film (and what a quality), is its magnificent photography, but some nice shots don't make up for two and a half hours of a pathetic film. Yes, it changed the cinematic "language" and gave all sorts of detached beatnik hipsters a calling card to their cool, but when examined with a sober eye the film is just another example of boredom being mistaken for profundity.
