Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Geonard Y — 08 May 2007
Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville.
Starring Alain Delon, Francois perier, Nathalie Delon, Cathy Rosier, Jacques Leroy.
DelonÕs Jef Costello could be the most reckless hitman in all of cinema. He eliminates a target, lets go of a witness who saw his face and in a matter of minutes, shows up for a police line-up wearing the same coat he wore during the killing and looking a lot like a hired hitman with hands inside his pockets. And witnesses who werenÕt able to recognize him must be on drugs! The police procedure is stupid also. I donÕt get it why they keep following him when they know where he lives. As for the other bad guys. They are terribly in need of going to the school for bad guys and taking up ÒHow to put a bugging device 101.Ó The only favorable thing about the movie is that it inspired other movies such as JarmuschÕs ÒGhost DogÓ and probably WooÕs ÒThe Killer.Ó.
Best Scene: The interrogation.
