Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Ryan B — 27 Mar 2016
Soulful, heart-breaking, intense...these are only a few of the words to describe Jeff Nichols' new film. Dropping you right in the middle of the action from the opening credits, the film skips exposition in favor of raw emotion and forces the audience to catch up to the story and its characters.
Michael Shannon gives his most nuanced performance in this father/son tale that's beautifully wrapped within the sci-fi genre; a film Spielberg might've made in the 1980s had he been capable of refusing to pander to sentimentality and gross conventionality.
By far, the best film I've seen this year.
