Review of M (1931) by Donovan S — 29 Aug 2010
As if you needed another endorsement. But still: the transition from silent film to talkie makes this even more absorbing, rather than anachronistic. Passages of noiseless action contrast with the Lorrie's final agonizing monologue as gorgeously as the compositions offset jagged black shades with curls of smoke and multiple sources of low light.
It's the granddaddy to your favorite noir, with an essayistic ending that, rather than turn into a kinetic showdown, turns into a meditation on what the hell evil is, anyway. If you tend to linger over watching this with any historical reservations, ignore them and see it now.
