Review of L'Eclisse (1962) by Jon P — 12 May 2015
Michelangelo Antonioni's masterpiece of mood cinema is a barrage of sumptuous images, aching distances and incommunicable desires.
This eerily awkward, hypnotic romance explores the material world as a barrier to human communication and intimacy. However, the real punch comes from Monica Vitti's extraordinary central performance.
Vitti gives us a troubled introvert caught in an extroverted world, and we watch in agony as she slowly succumbs to an unsure romance. Vitti's Vittoria craves something deeply, but she's unable to express exactly what - and her shuffling pain is precisely what keeps this enduring movie moving.
