Michelangelo Antonioni and his once muse, Monica Vitti, should never be under-estimated. This movie gets better every time I see it.

On the one hand it is a sort of love story, but it is really more about the mixed feelings both Vitti and Delon both have about the other that really matters here. Minimal in the way they speak --- Antonioni captures an Italy in the midst of post War change. The landscape and architecture are as important to this story as are out two young lovers.

Nearly every emotion or concern felt is reflected back to them from the walls and surroundings that surround them. It as if this "love" is wanting to return to the old world comforts but how can it thrive in this evolution of a new world. An essential film.
