Review of Jason and the Argonauts (1963) by Ken B — 07 Jul 2008
A lot of the appeal of Jason and the Argonauts is it's old fashion, epic fun. Herryhausen's wonderful visual effects is the movies greatest strength. It is very pleasing to see all of this mythology brought to life by one of cinema's greatest special effects practitioners.
Unfortunately, his work is one of the few real joys contained in the movie. Both the acting and the script are laughable at best. Jason and the Argonauts has a lot in common with the big budget flicks of today.
The effects are fantastic, but the rest of the movie is just barely acceptable as a vehicle for the action. This movie certainly deserves it's classic status, if only for the transcendent visual effects, but don't expect much more than a mediocre film to accompany them.
