Review of It Happened One Night (1958) by J J — 26 May 2011
Delightful romantic comedy from Frank Capra. Set in the depression, it's the perfect vehicle for Capra's trademark sappiness. In a chance encounter, a reporter meets a spoiled, socialite who's run away form home, with her highly influential father hot on her tail.
He makes a deal with the woman, she lets him do a story on her, and he helps her escape. Often described as the first screwball comedy film, 'It Happened One Night' was still fresh despite coming out a whooping seventy six years ago! Clark Gable was magnificent as the lead, just more proof that GWTW wasn't his only great performance.
Claudette Colbert is also good, the chemistry between her and Gable was electric.
