Review of The Third Man (1949) by J J — 26 May 2011
Classic that still holds up today. Visually this film is astounding, from the eerie, dark streets of Vienna to the unconventional camera angles to the great use of shadows and lighting, everything is on point here.
Great music too, I can still here the famous theme tune in my head. Each character is fleshed out and layered, the lead gives an admirable performance but the real star here is Orson Welles, who, although is a central character, only has about 10 minutes of screen time.
His entrance to the film is simply iconic, not to forget the memorable speech atop the Ferris wheel. The film was thrilling and suspenseful right till it finished, with a great ending to boot. A classic in the truest sense of the word and to me, it's quite possibly the greatest film ever made.
This is what got me into classic cinema and I haven't looked back ever since.
