Review of King Kong (1933) by J J — 26 May 2011
Had some very good qualities such as the perfect, brisk pacing, the film never drags and is action packed throughout, the special effects, they may be dated but you cannot deny how far ahead of their time they are and I also liked the characterisation of Kong himself, in the remake I felt they tried to make him too human, he's an animal at the end of the day and this version portrays him as one. The remake done a few things better such as cast Naomi Watts and give her a good character to work with, Fay Wray was just screeching throughout the whole film which did get grating. The older version did suffer from some corny dialogue and hokey romantic scenes but it's a pure action adventure film at the end of the day and doesn't try to be something it's not. To conclude, I'd rank both versions on par with each other, both have their own qualities and both have some glaring flaws but they both make for a cracking action film.
8/10.
