Review of Gettysburg (1993) by Jason D — 11 Aug 2013
I'll give it one star for the effort that went into working with thousands of (obviously) volunteer actors in the battle scenes. The rest of the movie is so bad it's almost funny. I couldn't get over how phony the makeup was (just look at the cover).
The armies look like they just got their uniforms dry cleaned and pressed before the battle. The battles scenes (usually the most exciting part of a movie) were long and drawn out, showing the same action countless times from different angles.
I actually fast-forwarded through them! The use of the cut-rate movie score was heavy-handed, playing very loud and dramatic music during the most inappropriate times. I think they were trying to make the scenes more dramatic but it was VERY annoying.
I don't think Jeff Bridges gave such a great performance - I just think everybody else stank. I don't understand how this movie got such high marks. The book is great though...one of my favorites.
