Review of Gettysburg (1993) by Antonio C — 15 Apr 2016
Berenger, Daniels and Sheen are just great in their portrayals of the Generals of the defining battle of the Civil War. The fly in the ointment is the toe curling horrific portrayal of the British Envoi to the Confederate States.
..a Coldstream Guard officer shown as a "tea-drinking chinless wonder" in the true Hollywood portrayal of "British" people. A grotesque and unnecessary inclusion in what is otherwise a very, very good film.
The Southern States were, in fact, descendants of English colonists started by Sir Walter Raleigh some 200 years earlier. ENGLISH colonists, NOT British. FACT. This really detracts from what is, essentially, a very very good film.
Factual, gripping, even though we know the outcome. It was a very close run in the final analysis, and if the "Waterloo" mentality in Lee's thinking could have been subdued, the outcome would have been different and the world a completely different place now.
Putting General Longstreet as the "main" character, I feel, takes the real "hero" of the battle, Robert E Lee, out of his true position. He was was the the man who "out-generalled" all the Northern generals in virtually every battle and only superior numbers and armaments won in the end.
The film does, however, record the fact that he was the most beloved General of the whole war. It is a great film and one that everyone should see. If you can sit through the "British" scenes!!!!
