Review of Get Carter (1971) by Devin R — 11 Nov 2007
Get Carter is a solid and gritty British gangster picture starring Michael Caine as the vicious Jack Carter. After traveling to Newcastle to attend his brother's funeral, he begins to suspect that his brother's death wasn't an accident and sets out to follow a complex trail of lies, deceit and cover-ups through Newcastle's seedy criminal underworld; hopefully leading Carter to the man who ordered the death of his brother.
Get Carter is one gangster movie that still packs a punch, and seems to have aged fairly well over the decades. Caine is a perfect badass in the role; capable of being equally smart and menacing, and yet we find ourselves always rooting for him.
As far as British gangster movies go, this is definitely one of the best ones out there, and is definitely recommended if you like Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.
