Review of Dreams (1990) by Amasa G — 21 Oct 2016
Conseptually this movie is pretty brave. Dreams tend to make pretty bad plots in that they tend to defy reason and end before you can come to a logical conclusion about them. Often times, this is what held the dreams of Akira Kurosawa back from becoming great stories. I can tell that Akira edited them a little bit to fit them in to a story but they still lacked a little bit a soul.
Feeling, however, was plentiful in this film. Often times the only thing that would hold together a scene or a story would be the central feeling behind it - and I suppose this is what a dream is. A central core of feeling that one organizes events around.
Besides these complaints - my only other complaint is that I was really looking forward to watching Martin Scorsese play Vincent Van Gogh - but once it came I was #1 disappointed with Martin's acting and the dismal faux artistic sentiments coming from the dialog and #2 that Vincent Van Gogh was speaking English and furthermore that he had a new york accent.
I would say that if you have never watched an Akira Kurosawa film before - don't make this your first. Go ahead and watch another one so that you can enjoy/forgive him for this one.
