Review of Dreams (1990) by Tor M — 09 Apr 2015
My first Akira film and I started of with one of his last films. It felt like a nice choice since it's not as long as many of his more known films.
This is an very inspiring film. We follow eight dreams - supposedly Kurosawa's own. The "Blizzard" was my favorite, but the Van Gogh-themed one was also good - with Scorcese as Gogh, funny. "Mount Fuji In Red" was another great one. Actually, all of them where good, some where excellent.
It has fantastic music and it's lovely shot - it looks amazing on screen. Dreamy - naturally, but there are so many original touches here. Smoke, colors, camera placements, sounds. Amazing.
I felt that it could have been some shorter dreams, or maybe a dream or two less. This is basicly eight shorts based on dreams. Few similarities except from the dreamy aspect. As a whole it's all right, but it does not stand as a great single cinema piece for me. Not shure how a film like this could, though. Still, I'm positive about this film - I enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward for his other films in the future, it's hard to know where to continue after this one, though.
8.5 out of 10 brush strokes.
