Review of Dreams (1990) by Pablo G — 20 Sep 2015
Supposedly based on actual dreams Kurosawa had, these are 8 dreamlike short films. One is so nightmarish I can barely watch it. 2 are simple childlike films starring children. The most enjoyable one is the shortest, at only 10 minutes and shows Martin Scorsese as Van Gogh, featuring Chopin's music.
It is enjoyable because we get to see some of Van Gogh's paintings and special effects allow us to enter some of the paintings. The most brilliant filmmaking is "The Blizzard", about Mountain climbers close to death due to being trapped in a 3 day snowstorm.
One deals with the haunting aftermath of World War Two, in which a Japanese officer is visited by all the ghosts he led to their deaths in battle.
