Eight short "dream" stories told in roughly chronological order. Some are downright boring, others are classic Kurosawa - filled with excellent imagery and subtle but intelligent themes. If you've got the patience, there's good things to be gleaned from this, but it's too comfortable with its tormentingly slow pace.
