Review of Dersu Uzala (1961) by Tom G — 21 Apr 2008
Wow. Apparently, Kurosawa was utterly incapable of directing an average movie, let alone a bad one. Dersu Uzala isn't necessary amongst my favorites of his, but this is one amazing story about friendship, men vs nature, civilization vs wilderness. Filmed under the USSR regime in a gorgeous (yet stunningly menacing) Siberia. And Dersu, the title character, is one unforgettable human being.
Kurosawa did this movie during his darkest hours, when he was ignored by the japanese studios, and around his suicide attempts. He thus transmitted much of his melancholy and pain in this story.
