Paradoxical Mordern Classic in every sense of the word. As a MassCom student I can also appreciate the art of film editing and splicing together old and new film footage w/o the benefit of FORREST GUMP-ish CGI or digital lip-synching.
If Mel Brooks deals w/ parody, his friend Carl Reiner deals w/ the smarter, play-it-staight comedy. And w/ the help of Steve Martin's tongue-in-cheek manner and mmm... Rachel Ward... an otherwise convuluted neo-noir becomes comedy gold. Favorite sex dialogue: "What are we going to do?" "Kinsey, from cover to cover.".
