Review of What Maisie Knew (2013) by Jamie I — 10 Aug 2013
Told from Maisie's POV, at the beginning of What Maisie Knew, Maisie's parents fight for custody of their young child. Custody is awarded to her father but what soon unfolds is that neither of her parents are selfless enough to put their lives on pause to raise their daughter let alone pay much attention to her.
Both mom (Moore) and dad quickly remarry, dad to Maisie's nanny, Margo, and mom to a bartender she hardly knows, Lincoln (Skarsgard). Meanwhile, mom and dad flutter in and out of Maisie's life with little regard for their daughter and soon Margo and Lincoln become Maisie's primary caregivers.
Not too long after they both begin to love her as if she was their own. (This is the part that really hit home with my and why I loved this movie so much. If you have ever cared for a child (extensively), you will grow to love that child.
) What is heartbreaking about this film is that neither parent can see what a beautiful, joyful and loving child they have. They are too wrapped up in their own lives. Real, touching, and at times heartbreaking What Maisie Knew is definitely recommended.
