Review of Visitor Q (2001) by Zak G — 01 Feb 2005
I saw "Visitor Q" the other day, and it was like the one I'd been waiting for. It's strange because I loved it, but I don't think I'd really recommend it to almost anyone I know. Would I tell them about the scene where the man is fucking a dead body and it shits on him? The scene is brilliant, but how could I describe it in such a way that anyone would want to see it? If I said the movie is like an essay on family life taken straight from freshman Psych 101 notes but illustrated with super-dramatic incest/rape metaphores, I don't think it would sound much like an endorsement. Oh well, if you happen to see it, maybe you'll love it too, maybe not, but I'm going to go ahead and call it the best film of 2002, so there.
I also watched "The Triplets of Belleville", which I think maybe, just maybe, got a little bit overhyped. I'd heard so much about how "inventive" and "imaginative" the animation was, but honestly I don't think I saw much more going on creativity-wise than I did at the Spike and Mike show a week ago. Don't get me wronge, it was cool, but if the exact same movie had come from Cleveland or Toronto, rather than Paris, I don't think many of these critics would have even gone to see it, let alone raved about to no fucking end.
Also I saw "Shaun of the Dead" a while back, and it was great, although the intensly sad ending was a little innapropriate in a comedy about zombies. I feel like just because I've watched some characters running away from zombies for an hour that doesn't mean I'm prepared to care when one of their moms dies. All in all very good, though, with gorgeous zombies and lots of great gags.
