Review of The Wiz (1978) by Matt H — 18 Aug 2008
Yeah, the stage version is sooo much better. Stephanie Mills was robbed, because Diana Ross is too old and nowhere near as interesting a singer as Stephanie. The visuals are awesome (an urban Oz was definitely the right way to go), but the decision to make Dorothy a hysterical screaming kindergarten teacher with arrested development was just, just not good. Especially because Diana Ross plays it to the shrill hilt--"BUT MR. WIZ! PLEEEEASE!!!!!" "LIES! NO MORE LIES!!!".
Still, it's one of the best scores in musical theatre history, so you still have to give it props.
