Review of The Wiz (1978) by Kevin R — 02 Feb 2015
I don't want to play any numbers. I just want to get home!
Dorothy is a 24 year old kindergarten teacher who has visions of something bigger but doesn't have the courage to step out of her comfort zone. One day she is whisked away to a magical land known as Oz. She meets other beings that lack something and don't have the courage to chase their dreams. Dorothy and her new friends will need to work together to accomplish their goals. Can Dorothy cross this magical land and find her way back home?
"Do you know you're 24 years old and never been south of 125th street?".
Sidney Lumet, director of 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Network, Serpico, Child's Play, and Running on Empty, delivers The Wiz. The storyline for this is amazing, well written, and puts a fascinating original spin on an old story. I adored the special effects, costume, make-up, and characters. The songs were also brilliantly done. I adored the cast which includes Michael Jackson, Richard Pryor, Diana Ross, Ted Ross, and Nipsey Russell.
"What do you sniveling dead beats want?".
This is one of those movies you're ashamed you haven't seen and don't tell anyone you haven't seen it until after you've seen it. I found this on HBOGO and was very excited to finally cross it off "that list." This film was magnificent and I really see myself adding it to the DVD collection one of these days. This is an epic masterpiece that is a must see!
"Why have you cursed this lowly, mangy animal so?".
Grade: A+.
