Review of The Way We Were (1973) by Nate W — 01 May 2010
In "The Way We Were" Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford play two people so deeply in love that they can't even see how wrong they are for each other, not that it would matter to them anyway.
Babs plays an opinionated political activist and Redford a casual, privileged WASP. Despite their differing philosophies, the forces of attraction between them cannot be denied. This film is an ideal example of the two leads being much better than the movie theyâ??re in.
Both actors play their respective roles so effortlessly, and their chemistry is highly palpable. It elevates what is essentially a romantic melodrama into a touching and passionate love story, helped along by Marvin Hamlisch's lovely musical score and the haunting title ballad.
