Review of The Warriors (1979) by Ann D — 20 Oct 2010
Once you accept that this film bears absolutely no semblance to real gangs, it's an enjoyable adolescent suburban male fantasy. the film tapped into my childhood memories of playing tag or capture the flag around the neighborhood and dividing into different teams.
the threat of real violence, ugly and sadomasochistic, isn't really a factor in this film, nor are realistic racial demographics, the presence of guns and drugs, and the cruel power dynamics that one would assume dominate gangs.
this is a fantasy, and an extremely fun one at that, loaded with iconic performances, copious homoeroticism, a classically inspired narrative, imaginative costume design, and overall, a spirited rendering of a bizarre fantasy world (posing, of course, as modern-day new york city).
