Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Kent G — 17 Aug 2009
Sort of a sequel to Lola, and it carries the Ophuls style into this film as well. There's even a scene that pays homage to Earrings of Madame de... Similar to Lola is the theme of chance, but Demy is not as interested in abstract metaphysic of chance as Kieslowski.
The colors in decors and clothing are ridculous colorful. Really liked the score although it's used overdramatically at times. Some scenes are extremely sappy while others such the ending is surprisingly delicately handled.
