Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Edgar C — 22 Jul 2014
From any vantage point or angle, this is Jacques Demy's finest hour. Brilliant and sweetly sad, this magical movie lingers as a pretty memory with tunes that are forever on the tip of your tongue. A cinematic masterpiece that truly needs a 4K Blu-Ray restoration. Criterion, where are you?
Update - Criterion came through! It is not a 4K restore, but beautiful just the same. Is it me or does this film somehow manage to get further under my skin as I age? As beautiful as it is --- and it is stunningly beautiful, the meanings of this film have taken on a far more potent depths. I think, as a viewer, I have grown up into the ideas expressed in the movie. First loves are devastating and magical. They are bittersweet because they have to be. As Madame Emery points out to her daughter, people only die of broken hearts in the movies. Sigh. A truly magical film. ...And, very French.
