Review of The Swarm (1978) by Al M — 30 Sep 2011
Probably one of the worst films I have ever seen that actually had a budget, The Swarm features an amazing ensemble cast that it manages to transform into daytime soap stars. In fact, The Swarm feel like a daytime soap opera with random scenes of bee swarms thrown in.
It tries to build itself around the drama between the characters but never comes off as anything but cheesy, heavy-handed, and just plain stupid. A decently apocalyptic scenario at the end, which becomes ludicrous again if you do a little reading about killer bees, does little to salvage the fact that the film is too long (the version I saw was 2 1/2 hours not 1 hour 56 minutes as noted above), extremely boring, overly dramatic, and just dumb from beginning to end.
