Review of The Swarm (1978) by Peter H — 11 Dec 2010
The biggest problem with The Swarm (at least the version currently available on home video) is that it's just too damn long. I'm sure the cut released to theaters was still pretty goofy/aggravating (what with the incessant scientist vs. military brass bickering and the introduction of far too many characters superfluous to the plot played by actors who deserved better) but at least it would have been easier to sit through.
And could someone explain to me how, if the bees caused a nuclear power plant to go up in a mushroom cloud, releasing obscene amounts of radioactive material into the air over Texas, they managed to escape and move on to Houston? For that matter, how did any of the human characters survive this would-be Chernobyl-scale event?
Not a total washout... only borderline so. The special effects are pretty nifty (especially those of the swarm clouds flying ominously through the air) and the finale is pretty spectacular... if you can hold out that long.
