Review of The Swarm (1978) by Matthew D — 15 Mar 2015
I remember seeing this movie as a kid and thinking how awesome it was. Mainly because some kid, whose parents were stung to death by bees, got to drive a car. I recall thinking how there was no way he was gonna get in trouble for driving.
Watching it again, this movie is SO terrible. Bad acting from an all - star cast. You can't throw a killer bee without hitting an Oscar winner. This was the penultimate movie for Irwin Allen, who directed The Towering Inferno and other greats.
The thousands and thousands that die, from bees, is pretty ridiculous, too . But the greatest thing, the absolute icing on the cake, is the lines about the bees. At some point, the Africanized killer bees are referred to as "the Africans".
And the political incorrectness ensues. "The war with the Africans is now under military control." "By tomorrow there will be no more Africans. At least not in the Houston sector." "This is a dress rehearsal to set procedure for any future African challenges.
" So awesome. Watch it if you love crappy 70's disaster movies.
