Review of The Stuff (1985) by Katharine B — 05 Aug 2008
Pure 80s horror silliness. I mean, it's a film about a creamy yogurt like desert infecting and killing people. This is clearly meant to not be taken seriously and the cast has a great time with it, including a very over the top Paul Sorvino as an action hungry soldier.
The effects look completely ridiculous and have not aged well at all, which is part of it's charm, but the absence of any actual gore (most people just ooze white goo) takes away from the death scenes. It pretty much looks like The Blob, if the blob looked like mutant Dairy Queen.
There's a lot of fun to be had here but it does wear thin after about an hour, even though the climax is the craziest part of the whole movie. Definitely worth checking out for 80s horror fans but it's not one of the better ones.
