Here's a controversial opinion: I feel Jack Nicholson was mis-cast in this role. Maybe I know how the movie ends, but the before-state was never convincing.
The movie is mysterious, and honestly I feel it's a bit obtuse. It's long, it's surreal--I'm never quite sure if I actually "get" the movie, but it's a different kind of experience from other Kubrick films.
