Review of The Revenant (2012) by Adrian Z — 26 Mar 2012
2 - It seems debutant director Kerry Prior is trying to remind us of Shaun Of The Dead. Chris Wylde plays a slacker (with more than a passing resemblance to Simon Pegg's own famous zombie slaying creation) whose friend (David Anders) comes back dead from the Iraq War, or rather blood sucking "undead", as he soon finds out.
They then prowl the night for the blood of criminals, at least to get sympathy votes from viewers, but things eventually get out of hand. Although the attempt is there, the black humour and sarcasm is not witty enough to sustain this as a comedy, and then the film seems to go nowhere for a while.
However, once the turning point is reached halfway, the film becomes an increasingly heavy handed, ugly, unpleasant shlockfest. Mean spirited to boot. No more sympathy points. That The Revenant couldn't decide on a tone, and go with it consistently, does hurt it.
That said, I'm dead certain that it will achieve some sort of undeserved cult status.
