Review of The Phantom of the Opera (2004) by Revvie L — 12 May 2017
Gorgeous, warm, funny, moving, at times disturbing and thoroughly enjoyable. The cinematography is superb and there is breath and life in every moment. It's clear that this was a labour of love for all involved, and the characters are played (and directed) with genuine empathy and care.
This includes even the supporting cast: Miranda Richardson's Mme Giry is an absolute gem, as is Minnie Driver's Carlotta and of course the legendary Simon Callow and Ciaran Hinds as the hapless managers.
It is not a recreation of the stage show, but a brilliantly cinematic adaptation of it. A completely under-appreciated movie.
