Would anyone expect anything less than greatness from Lon Chaney, "the man with a thousand faces"? The film is horrific, in a good way, as it was intended to be. The fact that it is a silent movie (with accompanying music, of course) makes it so much scarier; the audience really must glue their eyes to the visual and pay attention, and more involvement = more fright.

This is the least sympathetic Phantom (an exam question I encountered recently: which is the most sympathetic Phantom between this film, the 2004 film and the novel?) and Lon Chaney did a great job with the make-up, no doubt.

A little reminder that Phantom of the Opera really isn't just about songs and romance!
