Review of The Phantom of the Opera (1925) by Simon D — 25 Aug 2013
Not too bad for a silent movie I wasn't expecting to see scenes in colour from a movie made in 1923, I guess this has been added to parts afterwards. I thought that the bad syncing of the singing was a bit shoddy and despite the phantom being referred to as a ghost several times, he clearly wasn't a ghost.
The best part by far was when the phantom is first unmasked, the way he stares into the camera in shock is classic comedy gold. Another trend which I'm not used to is the sudden endings to these old films, they seem a bit "blink and you miss it" which I suppose is more to the point than our happy ending style we have now, but just takes a bit of getting used to.
