Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Tim J — 25 Mar 2011
A film the people liked more than the critics. In fact this got panned when it was released in the US. Nicely realised, I thought, and true-ish to the book in that it simply dropped 90% of the heavy-going theology lessons, leaving only the core detective story.
The use of so many odd faces in the cast I found a little distracting and felt it detracted a bit from Ron Perlman's stand-out performance as Salvatore, his being the only character who is meant to appear physically odd. Connery is a cool Franciscan and brings the gravity and charm to a very grim setting while Slater just seems to stick with playing wide-eyed wonder throughtout, but then he was only 15.
