Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Ma'ark T — 25 Apr 2014
Sean Connery plays a Franciscan monk who favours reason over blind faith, called to investigate mysterious deaths at a secluded abbey. Then 15yr old Christian Slater is his young apprentice, impressionable, but learning at his master's side. This is a dark film, based on Eco's novel, a thriller/murder mystery set sort of like a much darker Cadfael. Look for Ron Perlman in a small role, and F. Murray Abraham as the nemesis of Connery's William. The whole thing was shot at an actual monastery at Eberbach, Germany.
This film marked a sort of late career revival for Connery, as he won the Best Actor at the British Academy Awards for his role. Interesting, worth a watch.
