Review of The Musketeer (2001) by Phil P — 06 Sep 2011
This was one of those films that I saw when I was a teenager and kind of liked it. When I saw it as an adult (and a much more seasoned movie watcher), it was kind of clichéd and overblown, but not completely unlikable.
The flick really tried to make a star out of Justin Chambers ("Grey's Anatomy"), but didn't end up propelling him into headlining roles. Still, he's amiable and up to the task of the role of D'Artagnan - at least in this manifestation of the character.
The action is so over-the-top that if it weren't for the incredibly well-choreographed fight sequences, it'd probably be pretty lame. Stunt coordinator Xin Xin Xiong (whose credits include many Jet Li films) definitely amps up the fight sequences for the flick, but the story doesn't really step up the way the stunts do.
In fact, the story is about as subpar as they come. Still it's got some decent humor, and a delightfully menacing performance from Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs) as Richelieu's henchman. It's certainly not a thinking man's film, but not all bad.
