Review of The Musketeer (2001) by Christina E — 14 Aug 2010
Say what you want, but this movie was joyfully mindless fun. Having read Dumas's legendary novel, I was somewhat disappointed that the movie strayed so far from the book.
The sword fights were quite rediculas, but like I said before, they were fun. As long as it was a sabre the musketeer was holding and not a bird in a bag on a string, the insane speed didn't bother me, although actual duels were nowhere near that berserk.
Battlefield humor floats my boat and the film scratched that particular itch. Insults would have been flying back and forth in 17th century France, and it just added to my mindless glee.
Having said all that, I am working on a history minor and all of the history was simply absent. France was more or less the epicentre of the Enlightenment movement and the movie did nothing to even suggest the extremity of the religious and political tensions.
