Review of The Man Who Laughs (1928) by Joe L — 27 Nov 2008
Deeply melodramatic, but also haunting and effective. all the performances are excellent, but it is veidt, who has the unique challenge of conveying the character's drives despite a permanent grin.
bears many similarities to 'phantom of the opera,' but this is a much more artfully executed film. beautiful, dreamlike photography. this seems to be the era of silent film where shots were truly composed like paintings.
it's also the beginning of rudimentary, non-synced sound effects.
