Review of The Man Who Laughs (1928) by Forrest K — 15 Aug 2009
This could be a new favorite silent film. The storyline was intriguing, the cinematography was beautiful, the acting was superb, even the music wasn't too bad. Coming at the end of the silent film era, this is another one of the last great silent films before sound took the world by storm.
The character of Gwynplaine, being not only a major influence for the character of The Joker in the Batman universe, but also helped fuel the fire for Universal's monster movie mayhem that followed soon after the success of The Man Who Laughs.
Very important film in film history and a beautiful German Expressionistic film.
